My Oma Elisabeth (Bep) Sombroek, later Himmelreich, arrived in Australia from Rotterdam in October 1952 on the Fairsea.
She is looking for Jaap or Jacobus who was also aboard the Fairsea and disembarked in Melbourne. He would’ve been in his 20s and was travelling with his sister and her husband. Bep and Jaap kept in touch for a while before her boyfriend, later husband, put an end to the correspondence! She would love to find out what happened to him and get in touch with him or descendants.
I know it’s not much to go on but I would love to hear from anyone who might have any leads.
Hi Anna,
Do you have a last name of Jaap? Or do you have any letters from that period containing more details?
And purely by coincidence.. This guy is called Jacob Dijkstra and he was onboard the Fairsea in 1952.
There were no people onboard with the name Jaap. There were eleven people with the first name Jacob:
Bretenood, Jacob
Dijkstra, Jacob
Hiteert, Jacob
Hooiveld, Jacob
Jager de, Jacob
Jansen, Jacob
Meijer, Jacob
Schoen, Jacob
Simon, Jacob
Tameriue, Jacob
Velema, Jacob
There were five people with the first name Jacobus:
Bakk, Jacobus
Driessen, Jacobus
Kamp, Jacobus
Meijedersbagen, Jacobus
Zuileveld, Jacobus
Does any name ring a bell..?
Jacob Dykstra from Gold Coast Australia replied to us that he is Jaap Dijkstra from the Fairsea in 1952. Now we can only hope that he is the man you are looking for. So Anna, please tell us.
We asked him:
Do you recognize yourself in this story? Did you know Bep Sombroek or are you not the man we are looking for..? Are you also the man on the first photo?
His answer was:
If the question is, if I recognize my self in this photo, the answer is No. Yes I was on the Fairsea in 1952 and my name is Jaap Dijkstra.
So, mr. Jaap Dijkstra is NOT the man we are looking for…
